Gregor Sobocan is the President of the European Girevoy Sport Association (EGSA) and is a Master of Sport. To top it all off he is a proud member and founder of the Slovenian Kettlebell Club and the Slovenian Kettlebell Training Center. We at Kettlebellista salute this athlete because he is one of our idols in Kettlebell Lifting.
Kettlebellista: Hi Gregor! For those who are new in Kettlebell lifting, what can you say about KG sport in a nut shell?
Gregor Sobocan: Hi. First of all I would like to thank you to invite me to do an interview with me, it is an honor to an athlete to be inspiration to others.
To answer a question, let me just say that you love Kettlebells or you dont. I have dealt with many athletes, professional and amateur, and I have coached many different clients, and I knew in first two hours who will stay and who will go. I think there is no middle way. Kettlebell as sport is beautiful, because you dont need to go somewhere to compete, because every day is a competition, a struggle within and that is what makes you stronger, better and keeps you going.
Kettlebellista: When you hear Kettlebell “Master of Sport” Rank, what comes into your mind first?
Gregor Sobocan: Well, that has changed a lot lately. Before it was something, that was a long way and a big goal for me, now it is something, that I think every coach, that promotes himself as a Kettlebell Lifter should have. Master of Sports is just the beginning of a true Girevik’s (Kettlebell lifter) life.
For me, many things has changed since I reached that title. I wanted more the minute I set the bells down, now I want World Class Master of Sport
Kettlebellista: What is your training system’s main principle?
Well, it all depends on a current goal. If is it LongCycle or Snatch, or is it StrongSport… I try to practice all lifts, and then, 2 months before competition I change and I do specific stuff, depending on the goal I have. Right now I am training for LongCycle, but I have not chosen a competition to attend yet.
Kettlebellista: What are your best records on traditional and non traditional Kettlebell Sport lifts (official and unofficial)?
Gregor Sobocan: Jerk 2x32kg 116 reps
Snatch 32kg 164 reps
Jerk 2x24kg 167 reps
Snatch 24kg 241 reps
One Arm Jerk 40 kg 50/50
One Arm Jerk 64kg 17/12
One Arm LongCycle 57kg 16/16 in 4 minutes
Kettlebellista: What is your favorite lift?
Gregor Sobocan: It is very hard to say, because it changes all the time. At first it was LongCycle, then one arm Jerk, now it is Snatch… I guess the lift you are good at you like the most
Kettlebellista: To get to your level of Kettlebell lifting, would you suggest to incorporate the traditional lifts such as the Deadlifts, Squats and other lifts?
Gregor Sobocan: Yes, it is very important to do Squats and Dead Lifts to keep legs and back strong. I also like to keep my upper body in shape, but I use body weight exercises mostly, Dips and Pull Ups.
Kettlebellista: Any tips for us mortals here in the Philippines who want to achieve the Master of Sport Rank?
Gregor Sobocan: Well, there are many ways to get to Master of Sports, some just work better and faster then others. The main thing is to really want it, to have a good Coach who is at least Candidate Master of Sports and to follow the program as good as possible. There is no reason to hurry, better to be consistent.
Kettlebellista: Any plans visiting us here?
Gregor Sobocan: Well, I havent been to Philippines yet, so if you invite me I will come, I really love to do Sport Camps and seminars, and also visiting new Countries is a great thing. Thanks again
